Day 28

Name: Beth Barlow and Son

Are you an artist? Yes

What three Items will you take into the box?

1: Bamboo canes
2: Tissue paper
3: Tape

Why do you want to participate in this project?

After filling in for the phantom missing artist we now have another idea. Yes there are two of us but we feel we can make a comment on solitude and the division of territories to the detriment of some. We plan to do this by using above materials to create a wall down the middle of the space. This will lead to one of us having access to the door and so the facilities, food, water, toilet. This will lead to this one wanting to gain access to the other space. Tiny holes poked in the tissue will be patched up by the person in the good position. Eventually it all might get too much for the bad position person and it all might end in an attack on the wall.

Day 27

Name: Lee

Are you an artist? Yes

What three Items will you take into the box?

1: Pen

2: Paper

3: Another Mysterious item

Why do you want to participate in this project?

My aim is to try and count every one of my breaths whilst I am in the space, for this I will make a mark with the pen every time I breathe, probably using the time honoured method of counting up to up to four with vertical lines then a horizontal one for the fifth and then repeating over and over (and over) again. I think this will be interesting as (obviously?) I have never tried to do it before and I reckon it will be quite a unique feeling/state of mind that it produces. I like the idea of just trying to concentrate on one thing and one thing only for that amount of time and also the idea of reducing the complex bodily processes involved with respiration to mere uniform data that is completely abstracted from any context. I haven’t been practicing so I might not be able to hold my attention on one thing for that long, I guess we’ll see. But I will try my hardest and hopefully it won’t make me feel too insane. If it does I might just have to go to sleep instead.

Day 23

Name: Naomi Sumner

Are you an artist? Yes

What three Items will you take into the box?
1: Facepaint kit
2: Digital camera
3: A pen? Or maybe a box of rubber eggs?

Why do you want to participate in this project?

Firstly I just think it is an interesting idea to spend a day alone in a glass fronted space-very David Blaine!!! Also as an artist who is currently very busy delivering projects for everyone else I would really value a day where I am free to focus on my own art and start developing an idea I’ve had for a long time. This idea centres around the idea of the clown-someone who is visible in society yet somehow set apart. A character who appears foolish and yet portrays wisdom. Using the Bible and Shakespeare texts as inspiration for what might be seen as characteristics of foolishness and then looking at passers by to think about who modern day fools/clowns would be in today’s society. There is a tradition that every clown registers his face by painting it on an egg so I thought that might be an interesting way of capturing images. The rubber eggs is a joke to do with appearances-what appears fragile is bouncy and unpredictable!!!

What three Items will you take into the box?

1:! ! A Pack of Markers
2:! ! A Roll of Butcher Paper
3:! ! a Roll of Duct Tape

Why do you want to participate in this project?

I'm really interested in solitude and spectacle. I'm constantly looking at how to re-stage poetry and spoken word, so I think this project would be really interesting, as I'd like to do a whole of day of stream of consciousness writing using what exists outside of the window as my stimulus, being in a sanctioned space to people watch unabashedly because I'm safe within the constructs of the project, all the while being a spectacle in my assumed privacy..

What three Items will you take into the box?

1: Paper (various)

Why do you want to participate in this project?

I think spending some time in solitude is essential to being really present to other people at other times. But then I've never tried it for long, so this will be an experiment putting that belief to the test. I'd also like to spend a few hours experiencing life without gimmicks, gadgets, entertainment, or small-talk. I hope I leave with my sanity intact!

What three Items will you take into the box?

1: Pen

Why do you want to participate in this project?

As it falls in time for easter, I believe its a great opportunity to give something up for a period of time representing a modern day perspective and reflection of the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert. During my time in the project, i will reflect and focus on the time Jesus spent in the desert and also reflect upon the time before his crucification using the Bible and I will write down my thoughts. As an artist, I am keen to explore methods of worship and contribute to the evolving world around us through art and religion.

Day 3

Artist: Kate royle

Item 1: String

Item 2: String

Item 3: Gaffer tape

Why do you want to participate in this project?

I am interested in how space and environment influence the way we act and behave. The idea of isolation is sometimes something we crave for in a hectic ‘Big Brother’, ‘Facebook’ society. Using this idea as a point of departure, I would like to contradict the concept of being on display by creating my own escape – a retreat – through a sculptural intervention. Gradually building a protective cocoon for myself, I will slowly obscure myself from the viewer’s perspective. I would like to approach this situation as a further challenge for myself, by using it as an artistic sanctuary where I will have a chance to create and produce art - something I have found challenging since graduating from university last year. My nest will be a temporary dwelling where I will have the artistic freedom (through my isolation) to respond to the environment, experience and the material given to me.

Thursday, March 05, 2009

Artist 2

Name: Peter Hiett

What three Items will you take into the box?

1: a pen

2: a ruler

3: paper

Why do you want to participate in this project?

I think it sounds like a really interesting project to get involved with, due to the fact that everyone involved will in essence, be in the same situation, but will react to the space differently.
I also think it would be fascinating to experience the stark contrast between the solitude and isolation within the space compared to the busy ever-changing city just outside.

I chose a pen, ruler and paper as my three objects because these are materials I often work with in my art. Due to the flexibility of these items, I would be able to enter the space without any preconceived plans for the day, this will allow me to react to the space and the experience in a natural and genuine way.

Day 1

Artist

Kolyn Amor

Three Items

1: A 'Stylophone' pocket organ
2: A 'Bop It Extreme 2' game
3: A 'Tamagotchi Music Star' virtual Pet

Why do you want to participate in this project?

As I tend to work in a closed-off space for much of the time, this would be a personal and professional challenge. I have restricted my items to three toys, each of which were popular in their time, are low tech, have a musical element (though are NOT music players) and have recently been re-launched. I am not skilled with any of these items so I would be learning them in a public space.

We love technology!

Set up wasn't entirely plain sailing yesterday (to say the least), but we're pretty much there now. And to prove it, here's the first glimpse of what the archives will look like.
